Creatures of Habit

Based in Miami, Creatures of Habit transforms the familiar last drug deal gone wrong trope. Yovanni Guerra is a committed teacher, husband, and father—a Miami-born son of the Cuban diaspora who has carefully buried a past in the drug trade. When he agrees to one final job with the childhood friends who shaped that life, the stability he’s built begins to fracture.

Set primarily in 2016, the novel unfolds alongside selected journal entries from earlier years, revealing the routines, compromises, and inherited instincts that quietly guided Yovanni’s choices long before the consequences arrive. Moving between past and present, Creatures of Habit examines how upbringing, culture, and environment shape identity—and the cost of survival in a world that rarely offers clean exits.
